Returns furnished by local authorities indicate that the number of officers, for whom I am the appropriate Minister, employed by local authorities at the 31st December, 1956, was 5,143. These figures include permanent, temporary and part-time officers but do not include officers in respect of whom other Ministers are the appropriate Ministers. Complete figures for the year ended 31st December, 1957, are not yet available but the figures vary little from year to year.
