Vol. 169 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Growers Sack Allowance.

andMr. Hughes asked the Minister for Agriculture whether the allowance of 5d. per barrel heretofore made to wheat growers for the use of hired or owner sacks will be made available during the coming harvest.

The flour millers decided this year to discontinue the custom under which they provided wheat growers with an allowance in respect of hired sacks. I have discussed the matter with representatives of the millers and asked them to reconsider their decision.

I should like to ask the Minister if, when he is preparing the Wheat Order for 1958, he would incorporate a clause in that Order providing that the millers should continue the service that they gave to farmers last year and supply sacks free?

I have told the Deputy that I have discussed this matter with the millers and asked them to reconsider their decision.

I put it to the Minister that if the millers are not prepared to meet him, this is a time when the Minister for Agriculture should be the defender of the wheat growers and that if he lets the millers get away with this, it will be just another cut. It would work out at about 3/4——

I know that the Deputy has some excellent advice to give, but I am not in need of advice at this time.

I think the Minister could always do with advice.

He is too obstinate to take it.
