Vol. 170 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kildare Housing Statistics.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (1) the number of houses at present being erected by (a) Kildare County Council, (b) Naas Urban Council and (c) Athy Urban Council, and (2) the number of persons employed on the housing schemes under each authority.

Forty-two houses were being erected for Kildare County Council at 31st May, 1958, and 35 men were being employed on the work at that date. No houses are being built at present by the urban council of Athy or Naas.

Could the Minister say if there is any proposal for the building of houses from Naas Urban Council or Athy Urban Council before him at present?

So far as Athy is concerned, negotiations are going on in regard to a site. So far as Naas is concerned the council was informed on the 20th June last by the Department that no objection has been raised to their undertaking a scheme of 16 houses.

Has the Minister not received further representations from Naas Urban Council that they wish to increase the density of houses on that site?

No. The only further information I can give the House is that the project, as we know it, is a 16-house project and is only in the preliminary stages. That is the only information I have.

The Minister will shortly get a request to increase the density of houses to 24.

We shall deal with that when it arises.
