Vol. 171 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Exports of Wheat.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the amount of millable wheat exported in the months of July and August and (b) the amount paid for it.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the quantity and value (f.o.b.) of unmilled wheat exported in the months of July and August, 1958. The data, required to be specified on the customs documents from which the statistics are compiled, do not include the information as to whether the wheat is millable or unmillable.

Following is the statement:—

DOMESTIC Exports of unmilled wheat in the months of July and August, 1958.

Paragraph (b) of the question inquired the amount paid for the millable wheat exported. Has the Parliamentary Secretary that information?

The question was:—

To ask the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the amount of millable wheat exported in the months of July and August and (b) the amount paid for it.

The answer is that a statement will be circulated in the Official Report giving those figures.

Two simple figures were asked for. While I fully appreciate the pressure on the Parliamentary Secretary's time, would it be unreasonable to ask him to give the two figures in a spoken reply?

In July, 1958, the quantity exported was 109,756 cwt. and the value of it was £115,783; in August, 1958, the quantity exported was 1,080 cwt., the value of which was £1,145. The totals were 110,836 cwt. and £116,928.

Thank you.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the total quantity of surplus native wheat exported during the eight months ended 31st August, 1958, and the average price per ton.

The total quantity of domestic exports of unmilled wheat during the eight months ended 31st August, 1958, was 513, 832 cwt. and the average (f.o.b.) price paid for it was £20 0s. 1d. per ton.
