Vol. 171 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Control of Exports.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the description of the goods the export of which is controlled by him, and the date and reference of the Order applicable in each case.

It is presumed that the question relates to controls, the policy of which is directed by me. In this sense, I exercise no controls apart from those contained in exchange control legislation.

Under the Exchange Control Act, 1954 (No. 30 of 1954) the exportation of goods of any class or description to a destination outside the sterling area is prohibited, except with my permission, unless payment to the value of the goods has already been made in a prescribed manner, or the Revenue Commissioners are satisfied that payment is to be so made within six months after the date of exportation. Exemptions from these requirements have been granted for certain classes of goods by the Exchange Control Regulations, 1955 (S.I. No. 129 of 1955) and the Exchange Control (Amendment) Regulations, 1958 (S.I. No. 40 of 1958).

Did I understand the Minister to say that he exercises no control under the Control of Exports Act?

No, it is under the Exchange Control Act.

Again, would the Minister join with the Minister for Health and ask the Tánaiste to come to the same viewpoint on these matters?
