Vol. 171 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Sugar.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the quantity and cost per ton of raw sugar and manufactured sugar imported in the year ended 30th September, 1958, or the nearest available date.

The quantities of unrefined and refined sugar under the heading "Beet Sugar and Cane Sugar" imported in the year ended 30th September, 1958, were:— (a) Unrefined — 30,521 tons at an average price of £30 9s. 7d. per ton (c.i.f.); (b) Refined — 4,098 tons at an average price of £36 16s. per ton (c.i.f.).

Could the Parliamentary Secretary state the reason for importing the refined sugar? Would the production of the 4,098 tons which were imported not give employment to the beet factories?

That is a separate question.

I addressed this question to the Minister for Industry and Commerce to see whether he knew.

The supplementary would be a separate question anyhow.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the amount of sugar in hundredweights imported into this country in the present year, (b) the countries of origin of such imports and (c) the amount imported from each country.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing, in respect of the period 1st January, 1958 to 31st October, 1958, the total quantity imported of unrefined and of refined beet sugar and cane sugar, distinguishing the countries of origin.
