Vol. 171 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Fishing Harbours.

asked the Minister for Lands whether it is his intention to make moneys available for the improvement of fishing harbours around the Wexford coast.

Proposals for the improvement of fishing harbours— around the Wexford coast and elsewhere—are, and will continue to be, considered on their merits. My function in the matter is to recommend a contribution from State funds towards the cost of improvements where I am satisfied that the outlay would be justified in the interest of fisheries. When the report of the expert appointed to advise on fishery harbours is completed, it will be possible to plan development on a national basis. In the meantime the usual facilities are available for improvements to minor harbours and piers.

Would the Minister say if there are any proposals in respect of any fishing harbours on the south-east coast?

I think there is no report yet prepared.

Has the expert commenced his survey?

Yes, his report is being prepared at the moment.

Can the Minister say when it will be available?

I would say within the next four or five months.
