Vol. 171 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Road Work.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the number of road workers employed by the Wexford County Council on the latest date available and on the same date in 1957, 1956 and 1955.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state for the years 1955-56, 1956-57, 1957-58 and 1958-59 the total amount of moneys available to the Wexford County Council for all classes of road work.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 99 and 102 together, and as the reply is in the form of a tabular statement to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

Year

1955-56

1956-57

1957-58

1958-59

Number of road workers employed at 31st October

631

490

415

413

Total money available

£435,000

£310,000

£250,000

£221,800

Note1. The amounts of money available include grants from the Road Fund, and provision from rates. They also include loans for county road improvement raised by the council as follows:

(a) £175,000 to 1955-56 to cover that year and the year 1954-55.

(b) £60,000 in the year 1956-57.

Note 2. In addition to the amounts above, a loan of £100,000 was raised in 1956-57 to cover the council's contribution to the cost of Wexford Bridge, and an increase of £135,000 in the grant for Wexford Bridge was also allocated in 1956-57.

Note3. The amount shown as available for 1958-59 does not include the Main Road Upkeep grant, which has not yet been allocated, pending discussion of the provision made by the county council from their own funds for road upkeep. Pending clarification of the foregoing issue, the amounts of the main and county road improvement grants have been provisionally reduced by the amount £4,100, by which the council's provision for upkeep fell short of last year's. The figure for 1958-59 takes this reduction into account.

Note 4. The above figures do not includes figures in respect of schemes financed with the aid of grants from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote.

Surely Question No. 99 has nothing to do with Question No. 102?

Question No. 100.

Could I have a reply to my question first? Surely Question No. 99 has nothing to do with Question No. 102, and both of them were taken together, with your permission.

There is no relationship at all.

I have no authority as to the way in which questions are taken.

The Minister asked your permission to take them together.

If you have no money you cannot have any employment.

That is what I am trying to establish.

The Deputy has, in fact, got more than he had before.

And you have fewer workers.

It is the Deputy who says that.

I wanted the Minister to say it though.
