Vol. 171 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Referendum on P.R.

43.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider the desirability of having the expected referendum on P.R. decided by the postal vote.

The Referendum Acts, 1942 and 1946 govern the method of taking the poll at a referendum. It is not proposed to amend these Acts to provide for the taking of the poll in the manner suggested in the Deputy's question.

44.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is intended that the referendum (if any) to amend the Constitution will be held on the present Register of Electors or on the new register due to come into force on the 15th April next.

The poll at a referendum is taken on the Register of Electors in force at the time the poll is taken.

That does not answer the question. Is it intended to be taken on the present register or on the register which comes into force after 15th April?

If the Deputy considers the reply, I think he will find his answer there.

The answer is not there. The Minister has dodged it.

The answer is that the date has not been decided.

That will depend on the Opposition.

I was not asked that.

Will it be held on the present register of electors or the new?

I have given the Deputy the answer.

The Minister cannot decide the answer.

Let the Deputy ask an intelligent question, if he wants an intelligent answer.

I would not address an intelligent question to the Minister because I know what would happen.
