Vol. 172 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Forestry Grant in Gorey Area.

18.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will increase the forestry grant to offset unemployment in the Gorey area.

The work programme being undertaken in the Gorey district this season by the Forestry Division is at the highest possible level having regard to the reserve of land available for planting and future acquisition prospects. Planting at Gorey Forest this year totals 213 acres compared with 72 acres last year. The present staff of 46 men is adequate to deal with the work programme. In the circumstances I regret that I cannot hold out any prospect of increased forestry employment in the district in the immediate future.
