Vol. 172 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price Index: Companies Stocks and Shares.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the names of the companies the ordinary stocks and shares of which are taken into account in calculating the price index numbers set out in number 35 Economic Series; and whether a straight or loaded average of such prices is taken.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the names of the companies the ordinary stocks and shares of which were taken into account in calculating the price index number of ordinary stocks and shares in January, 1959. This list is amended from time to time. In January of each year the list of companies is revised and if the stock or shares of any company have not been dealt in during the previous 12 months the company is excluded from the list. When there is a new quotation for the stock or shares of the company it is again inserted in the list.

In compiling the index for each month the amount of stock or shares issued in respect of each company is valued at the corresponding price shown in the stock and share list issued by the Dublin Stock Exchange for the beginning of that month. The resulting figures for the values of stocks and shares of all companies are aggregated and divided by the corresponding aggregate for the previous month. The ratio of the two aggregates is multiplied by the index for the preceding month in order to obtain the current index. In computing the aggregates adjustments have to be made for new capital issues and for bonus issues in order to obtain corresponding aggregates for each pair of two succeeding months.

Following is the statement:—
