Vol. 173 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Cork Arterial Drainage.

26.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is proposed to start arterial drainage operations in West Cork in 1959; and on what rivers he proposes to commence.

A survey of the Owenkeagh catchment area in West Cork, under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, has been commenced, and, as indicated recently to a deputation from the Cork County Council, the question of surveying also some of the smaller catchments in the county is being considered. There is no possibility of actual drainage works under the Act being commenced in West Cork during 1959.

We all know that big bodies move slowly and we know that the Government is no exception in this regard. I should like the Parliamentary Secretary to give the farmer's son some indication as to when the actual work of draining the rivers of West Cork will commence.

And North Cork also.

It is not possible to give that information at this early stage. The survey commenced recently; and when it has made a certain amount of progress, I may be able to give the Deputy some information.
