Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teaching of Physics and Chemistry.

31.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of schools in which physics and chemistry are taught, and their percentage of the total.

It is assumed that the schools which the Deputy has in mind are secondary schools and on that basis the following is the information sought.

The total number of recognised secondary schools which have applied for the special grants in respect of the teaching of physics and/or chemistry in the present school-year is 253, approximately 51 per cent. of the total number (494) of such schools. The percentage in the case of boys' schools is 75, girls' schools 35 and mixed schools 31.

The total number of recognised secondary schools which have applied for the grants in respect of the teaching of both physics and chemistry in the school is 226, approximately 46 per cent. of the total number of such schools, the percentage in the case of boys', girls' and mixed schools being 65, 34 and 24 respectively.
