asked the Taoiseach if he will state the quantity and value of Scotch whiskey imported in each of the financial years ended 31st March, 1952 to 31st March, 1959.

There is only one heading "Whiskey" in the Official Import List, under the headings of which imports are classified, and it is therefore not possible to distinguish separately imports of Scotch whiskey. In fact the original import documents themselves do not in all cases specify whether the whiskey imported is Scotch or not but it appears from an examination of some of these import documents that most of the whiskey imported from Great Britain is Scotch whiskey. It is possible therefore to provide the Deputy only with data in respect of total imports of whiskey and to give the Country of Origin as an indication to the type of whiskey. I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing for the periods in question the total quantity and value of whiskey imported, distinguishing countries of origin. The figures for the year 1958-59 refer to the period 1st April, 1958, to 28th February, 1959, the latest date for which figures are available.
