Vol. 174 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Reception in Limerick.

26.

asked the Minister for posts and Telegraphs what steps he has taken to remove interference with radio reception in Limerick City.

Complaints of interference with radio reception in Limerick City are investigated in the same way as those from other places as the radio interference staff can get around to them. Suppressors are fitted to electrical apparatus which is found to be causing interference if, as is generally the case, the owners are agreeable. According to my information there is nothing abnormal about the interference situation in Limerick City.

Is the Minister aware that the cause of at least part of the interference is equipment in the G.P.O. in Limerick and will he take some steps to see that the nuisance is remedied?

I am not so aware, but I shall have that aspect of the matter investigated.

Might I also ask the Minister is it a fact that interference with the reception of Radio Eireann or the B.B.C. is the only type of interference catered for by the engineers of his Department? In other words, if a wireless owner is experiencing interference with the reception of Continental stations, the Minister's Department does not regard this as being worth looking after?

I do not think that is entirely correct.

I have a letter to that effect.

The complaint is investigated and put right if it is possible to do so.

It might surprise the Minister to know that I have a letter from his Department stating that interference with reception of Continental stations is not regarded as coming within the province of the engineering section of the Department.
