Vol. 176 No. 11

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business as on the Order Paper: Nos. 1, 2, 17 and, in No. 17, Votes 1 to 25, inclusive; Nos. 18, 19, 8 and 20, and then resuming No. 17, Votes 56 and 23. If not already reached, it is proposed to interrupt business at 7 o'clock to take No. 17, Vote 3.

I have been accused by the Taoiseach, by implication, of having misled the House on a very serious question. I should like your permission, Sir, to read the quotation to which I referred. It is a quotation from the Irish Times of 13th July, 1959. The quotation from the speech of the Tánaiste is recorded here:—

"We are asking the Irish people in this election to stand behind the Irish Government which is trying to find some way of avoiding war which is so imminent."

That is the phrase to which I referred. I think the Taoiseach should be given an opportunity of withdrawing his very unjust implication.

Can the Deputy not raise it on the adjournment?

Somebody should vet the speeches of the Tánaiste before he is let out.

Somebody should stop the Taoiseach chancing his arm in more ways than one. But it will not worry the Taoiseach one bit. He thought he would get away with it.

In view of the fact that the Taoiseach is taking no steps to answer my charge, I should like to raise the matter on the adjournment.

I shall communicate with the Deputy.
