Vol. 176 No. 11

Committee on Finance. - Vote 24—Ordnance Survey.

I move:—

That a sum not exceeding £66,870 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1960, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Ordnance Survey and of Minor Services including the Facsimile Reproduction of Ancient Manuscripts.

Would the Minister please give some explanation of this Estimate, which shows an increase of 25 per cent. Surely we are entitled to an explanation of this jump of 25 per cent.?

There is an increase of £8,000 for salaries. That is mainly due to normal increments which were awarded during the past year, to some additional staff and to the filling of the post of Deputy Assistant Director which was formerly blocked by the seconding of an Army officer. There is another big item in this increase. Travelling expenses increased by £3,920 owing to increased activity and also to cover the cost of increased field allowance rates. Under Stores, there is an increase of £3,840. Provision has been made for the purchase of increased paper and chemical supplies and new equipment. Under Subhead D— Photographic and Printing Equipment —there is an increase of £5,750, which was necessary for the purchase of a new rotary offset proving press. I think that covers the increased costs generally.

Does that mean we are not to get any more surveying done? I thought when I saw the big increase that we were to get a new survey.

There is more work being done.

I thought the Minister said the reverse.

Vote put and agreed to.
