Vol. 177 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dairy Disposals Company: Limerick Developments.

22.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what developments the Dairy Disposals Company have in mind regarding their premises at Lansdowne, Limerick, the estimated cost, the potential employment envisaged, the countries to which the product or products will be exported and by what means, and the probable annual output estimated.

The Condensed Milk Company of Ireland (1928) Limited, which operates this factory, has recently embarked on the manufacture of cheese. Production has already commenced, and the company proposes to enlarge the scale of manufacturing operations next year and to provide a new building and plant.

As regards additional employment, the company informs me that, while this may not in itself be substantial, the manufacture of cheese will help to improve the prospects of retaining those workers whose employment may otherwise have been jeopardised by the present depressed state of the export market for condensed milk. The cheese will be exported mainly to Britain.

It is not the practice to publish details of the cost or scale of production of individual commercial enterprises.

Does the Minister happen to know what type of cheese is referred to?

So far, it is Cheddar.
