Vol. 177 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification in Kerry.

29.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when it is proposed to extend rural electrification to the Ventry, Ballyferriter, Dunquin and Ballydavid districts of County Kerry.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the districts of Ventry, Ballyferriter and Dunquin are included in the Ballyferriter rural area which has been considered for selection by the Board on a number of occasions but has not so far been selected as the returns for the area did not compare favourably with those for other areas awaiting development in the Board's Tralee district.

An initial canvass of the Ballydavid Rural Area was completed this year and the area will shortly be considered by the Board for selection for development.

Can the Minister say if any special consideration has been given to the fact that the area referred to is one of the real living Gaeltachta remaining in the country, when considering the earliest possible extension of rural electrification there?

The regulations that apply to the western areas apply in this case. I assure the Deputy that every attention is being given to that consideration.

Has no special consideration been given to districts that have remained purely Irish-speaking? Can the Minister say whether the regulations that apply there are the regulations that apply to what are called general western districts? Is there no special consideration for the living Gaeltacht?

It is a bit late now when the language is dead.

Can the Minister say if any further consultations have taken place between his Department and the Department of the Gaeltacht, such consultations having being initiated very early on?

That is a separate question.

There have been no recent negotiations.
