Vol. 177 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bridges Across Main Waterways.

44.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the steps to be taken by a local authority which is desirous of erecting a bridge across a main waterway, and the position regarding a loan and grants for such a project.

Normally, a local authority first seeks my approval in principle to the erection of a bridge. In certain circumstances, for example, if navigation interests or another local authority are concerned a bridge order under the Local Government Acts is necessary to regulate matters at issue between the several interests. A request for a loan or grant is considered at an appropriate stage having regard to the merits of the proposal and to such relevant factors as the estimated cost and the available funds. If a local authority wish to obtain any advice or information on the subject, in relation to a particular proposal, it is open to them to consult my Department.
