Vol. 177 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Reception in West Cork.

53.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will take steps to improve reception from Radio Éireann in West Cork.

As stated in reply to previous Questions on this subject the reception conditions in south/west Cork and in areas facing the European continent are admittedly not satisfactory because a large number of broadcasting stations operating on insufficient wavelength accommodation are causing interference with one another. Unfortunately there is no easy and immediate solution. The more extensive use of VHF broadcasting taking place in European countries will likely bring about a gradual easement of the congestion in the medium and long waves. Whether we should take part in VHF development ourselves for certain areas at considerable cost, or whether we should depend on an improvement in the medium and long wave position through the increasing use of VHF elsewhere is a matter that will no doubt be considered by the Broadcasting and Television Authority.
