Vol. 178 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick Housing Scheme.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government when approval may be expected for the Carey's Road, Limerick, housing scheme; and if he will state the saving per house on the present scheme as compared with the previous scheme.

Approval was given by the Department's letter of 20th inst. to the acceptance by Limerick Corporation of a tender for a scheme of 78 houses at Carey's Road. The approved tender was £176 per house, on average, lower than the tender which the corporation had proposed to accept in November, 1958.

Could the Minister say if there is a change in the area of the houses?

To give the Deputy the full particulars, with which I am sure he is familiar, might take too long.

I am not as familiar with them as the questioner.

Possibly not quite. There have been some changes in design but I think I should say that in July, 1958, the corporation proposed to accept a quotation in the sum of £132,000 for a scheme of 75 houses on this same site, and my Department rejected that proposal on the ground of excessive cost. The scheme was then re-advertised in November, 1958, and as a result of that re-advertising, the new figure that came up for the same scheme dropped to £129,000. The costs, even then reduced as they were by some £3,000 or £4,000, still represented costs much higher than obtained elsewhere. As a result of that, there was a general review of the house plans and the specifications. The final result is that instead of 75 houses, we have now got 78 houses, and that 78 houses scheme is costing £11,555 less than the original 75 houses scheme. While there may be some change in the design, I think, generally speaking, the large type of five-roomed house has been retained in the same number as was originally intended. There were 21 proposed and there are now 21. In addition, three further small houses have been put in the scheme and the over-all saving is somewhere in the region of £11,500.
