Vol. 178 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turbary for Mayo Tenants.

21.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission propose to acquire turbary to supply tenants in the Carrowholly and Kilmeena area, County Mayo; and when such acquisition will take place, and in what area.

It is expected that an extensive bog already taken over by the Land Commission at Barraglanna and Muckanagh will suffice to provide turbary for tenants from the Carrowholly-Kilmeena area.

Is it possible to get a nearer bog to facilitate the tenants in Carrowholly and Kilmeena?

There is no nearer bog than the bog to which I have referred within the notice of the Land Commission.

Is this bog which has been acquired by the Land Commission in the vicinity of Croagh Patrick?

I understand that the location of the larger portion of this bog, that is, the 360 acres at Barraglanna, is 13 miles from the Carrowholly and Kilmeena districts and that the other bog is approximately the same distance. As the Deputy will appreciate, turbary is very scarce in this area and people have to go long distances to get it.

I understand that turbary is scarce in this area but is it not possible to get nearer turbary for these people?

If the Deputy can indicate to me 300 or 400 acres of bog that is on their doorstep I shall be very glad to have the matter investigated.
