asked the Minister for Education how many candidates at the Leaving Certificate Examination, 1959, failed in (a) English, (b) Latin and (c) Irish; how many of those who failed in (a) English and (b) Latin failed in Irish; how many of those who failed in (a) English and (b) Latin failed the examination as a whole; and how many of those who failed in Irish would have been awarded the certificate if they had not so failed.

The numbers of candidates who failed in English, Latin and Irish were as follows: English: 352, Latin: 1,048, Irish: 599. Of those who failed in English, 137 failed also in Irish and 253 failed the examination as a whole. Of those who failed in Latin, 196 failed also in Irish and 425 failed the examination as a whole. 373 of those who failed in Irish would have qualified for the award of the Leaving Certificate if they had passed in Irish.
