Vol. 178 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export Levy on Sugar Foodstuffs.

52.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if there is a levy on exports to Britain of foodstuffs manufactured here which contain sugar; and, if so, what representations have been made to have this levy removed.

A levy is imposed by the British authorities on sugar and on the sugar content of manufactured goods imported into Britain, regardless of the country from which the imports come. It was decided by one of my predecessors in 1955 that no useful purpose would be served by seeking to have imports from this country treated exceptionally and the question has not since been raised.
