Vol. 179 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Discussions with British Government.

1.

asked the Taoiseach what progress has been made in the trade discussions with the British Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if he is in a position to make a statement on the progress of the Anglo-Irish trade negotiations.

3.

asked the Taoiseach if he is yet in a position to make a statement regarding the progress of the trade talks with Great Britain.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 1, 2 and 3 together.

As the House is aware, trade discussions with the British Government are being resumed this week at Ministerial level. The House will appreciate that, in the circumstances, I am not in a position to make any further statement at this stage on the progress of the discussions.

Would the Taoiseach indicate whether the discussions which are to take place in London on Friday next are likely to result at that stage in final agreement or will there be further talks before any agreement is likely to be arrived at?

I think it is probable there will be further talks.

Is there a possibility that the agreement may be finalised on Friday?

I did not bring my crystal ball with me.

Would the Taoiseach say if the discussions in question will be confined purely to matters of trade?

We wish you good luck and hope you will bring back the bacon.
