Vol. 179 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reinvestigation of Mayo Unemployment Benefit and Assistance Claims.

50.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare how many persons in Cloonmeen, Cloontea, County Mayo, have had their claims to benefit or assistance reinvestigated recently following receipt by his Department or its officers of anonymous letters, if he will state the results of the reinvestigation in each case; and if he will make a statement as to the attitude of his Department to anonymous letters.

Every complaint, whether anonymous or otherwise, as to the entitlement of recipients of benefit or assistance to the payments which they are receiving from my Department is investigated to ascertain the facts and determine whether the relevant statutory conditions are being satisfied.

Since 1st January, 1959, one person resident in the Cloonmeen, Cloontea, area has had his claim to unemployment assistance reinvestigated following receipt of an anonymous letter, as a result of which the assessment of his weekly rate of means for the purpose of the Unemployment Assistance Acts has been increased from 7/- to 22/- and the weekly rate of Assistance consequently reduced from 18/6 to 3/6.
