asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the present rent allowance to members of the Garda Síochána; and whether, in view of their unrealistic nature he will review the position.

The following are the particulars:—

RENT ALLOWANCE is payable at the following rates to every member of the Force for whom, or (if married) for whose family suitable official quarters are not available.

Station Sergeants, Sergeants and Guards.

The rates vary according to district, and range, in the case of married men, from a maximum of £61 17s. 6d. in Dublin to a maximum of £27 4s. 6d. in rural districts. A single Guard gets two-thirds of the rate for a married man.

A scheme for Conciliation and Arbitration for members of the Garda Síochána up to and including the rank of Chief Superintendent was brought into operation last year. The scheme provides that matters coming within the scope of the scheme will be dealt with exclusively through the machinery of the scheme. Such matters include claims and proposals relating to rent allowance.
