Vol. 180 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Officers of Local Authorities: Age Limit.

3.

asked the Minister for Health to what officers of local authorities his recent age limit order applies; and if he will clarify the order.

The Health (Officers Age Limit) Declaration, 1960, fixes age limits for all pensionable offices under local authorities for which the Minister for Health is the appropriate Minister. The age limit is seventy years for district medical officers and sixty-five for other officers. For an officer, who would not be entitled to a pension were he to retire at the fixed limit, the age limit is the age at which he becomes so entitled. The declaration will become effective on 1st July next.

I have already announced that certain concessions are to be made in the application of the age limit for district medical officers. A new declaration will be made shortly to give effect to this. For most of the other offices, to which the declaration applies, there is already an age limit of sixty-five years, fixed by earlier declarations, and the holders of such offices are practically unaffected by the declaration. There are, however, some minor offices for which there is no age limit at present. I have received representations on the application of the declaration to these, and am considering whether any concession can be made for them.
