Vol. 180 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Office of Comptroller and Auditor General.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General (a) the number of persons actually engaged in audit work and (b) the numbers there of who are qualified chartered accountants.

(a) Forty-four persons attached to the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General are engaged in audit work.

(b) Three are qualified chartered accountants. Serving officers not qualified as chartered accountants on appointment cannot, under the rules of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, become members of that body.

In view of the fact that the Comptroller and Auditor General is now auditing the accounts of a number of commercial concerns, State bodies, does the Minister not consider that professionally trained staff should be employed on that most onerous work?

I think they have as high a proportion of qualified men as any other auditing body in the city.

I doubt that.
