Vol. 180 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Local Authorities' Schemes.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance if with regard to the Taoiseach's invitation of last year to local authorities to submit schemes of an economic nature to the Government he will state the number of schemes submitted by the local authorities in County Wexford and the number approved.

Particulars of proposals received from local authorities in county Wexford in reply to the invitations issued by the Taoiseach and the Minister for Local Government requesting suggestions for State investment in important public projects of economic merit are as follows:—

Local Authority

Number

Wexford Corporation

1

New Ross Urban District Council

2

Wexford County Council

14

These proposals follow the general pattern of proposals received from local authorities as indicated in my reply to a Parliamentary Question on 10th February. None of them has been sanctioned as an important public project of economic merit but, as stated in that reply, some of them are of a type for which substantial State assistance is already available.

In other words, do I take it the Minister said that none of the schemes sent up was approved?

No, not as schemes of outstanding national importance.

The Taoiseach knew that when he was sending out the letters.

No. Taoiseach made a very valuable attempt to get schemes sent up but did not succeed.

Does the Minister for Local Government who wrote to the local authorities know? It was a most fraudulent letter. It was political propaganda and nothing else.

Because it did not indicate that what were required were productive schemes.

That is a new one from the Deputy.

I read it.

I do not see why this concerted effort should be made to attack the Taoiseach and the Minister for Local Government for doing their best in this matter. If they had done nothing, they would be accused of doing nothing.

They are getting nothing in any case.

Doing nothing is preferable to pretending to do something.
