Vol. 181 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Traffic Accidents at Stillorgan Road-Nutley Park (Dublin).

13.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that the bend at the intersection of Stillorgan Road and Nutley Park is highly dangerous; that a large number of accidents have occurred at this point of the road; that four such accidents have occurred since Christmas, one of which caused the death of a young girl; that such accidents have caused grave inconvenience to residents near the danger point; and whether he will take steps to secure that the bend is rendered less dangerous and that the speed of cars is controlled at this junction.

The initiation of any measures necessary for the treatment of the junction referred to would be a matter for the local authority or authorities responsible for the road, viz: at this section, the Dublin Corporation and Dublin County Council. I understand that a scheme for the improvement of the road from Donnybrook to Foster Avenue is being formulated and that negotiations for the acquisition of the necessary land are proceeding. Pending the improvement of the road, appropriate warning signs have been placed at the junction. As regards restrictions on the speed of vehicles, these can be secured under existing law only by regulations made following an application by the local authority or by the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána and after the holding of a local inquiry. As I indicated in reply to previous questions on similar situations, I consider it would be inappropriate to deal with particular proposals for speed limits pending the enactment of road traffic legislation, which will deal with this and other aspects of road safety. There is no current proposal before me for a speed limit on this road.

Perhaps the Minister would consider directing the attention of the appropriate authority in Dublin to the speed limit notice on a main road in Donegal which at some distance from the dangerous corner, says: "Slow", and 50 yards further on says: "Slower" and thirdly, says: "You are not going slow enough yet", which is the most effective directive on a corner of this kind I have ever seen.

It could be untrue.
