Vol. 181 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Distribution of Woollen or Worsted Cloths.

11.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the basis on which imported woollen or worsted cloths are distributed to (1) clothing manufacturers, (2) wholesalers and (3) other interests.

The Quotas appointed under the Control of Imports (Quota No. 13) Order, 1935, for imports of woollen and worsted materials, are distributed on the basis of previous purchases of such materials by registered importers. In the case of firms engaged in the manufacture of men's clothing and of firms engaged in the distributing trade, the basis of distribution is purchases from Irish mills in the year ended 28th February, 1959. In the case of firms making women's clothing, the basis of distribution is imports plus purchases from the Irish mills in the year ended 28th February, 1959.

12.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total amount and value of woollen or worsted cloth for the manufacture of clothing imported by (1) clothing manufacturers, (2) wholesalers and (3) other interests during 1959, 1958 and 1957.

13.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total amount of woollen or worsted cloth for the manufacture of clothing supplied to (1) clothing manufacturers, (2) wholesalers and (3) other interests by Irish mills during 1959, 1958 and 1957.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 12 and 13 together. In the case of Question 12 I cannot provide figures of imports on the basis stated but I can give the import allocations. As this information is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose to have it circulated with the Official Report, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle.

NOTE.—Particulars of deliveries of cloth in the year ended 29th February, 1960, are not yet available from the Irish Mills.

Having regard to the fact that this basis was set up in 1935 is the time not opportune to revise it, in view of changed conditions since then?

As the Deputy might have heard in my reply to his first question, the basis is now on purchases and imports, as the case may be, for men's and women's clothing, in the year ended 28th February, 1959, rather than 1935.
