Vol. 181 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Congestion in Mayo Townland.

21.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of acute congestion in the townland of Knappagh, Westport, County Mayo; and whether the Land Commission intend to take steps to remedy conditions in the area.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the townlands of Knappagh Beg, Knappagh More and Knappaghmanagh, in the Westport area.

Following rearrangement and enlargement in a number of cases, the holdings in these townlands have been revested in the tenants for some years past. Despite efforts made by the Land Commission, no suitable lands which would permit of further resettlement have been forthcoming in the meantime.

However, the possibility of acquiring for relief of congestion any such lands which may in future become available in the locality will continue to be fully investigated.

Could the Minister say if the Commissioners have any intention of migrating some of the tenants out of that area?

The information before me is that tenants are not particularly anxious to be migrated out of the area.

If offers were made would the Commissioners consider them?

I cannot go beyond what I have said to the Deputy. My information is that they are not anxious to migrate from this area.
