Vol. 181 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Welfare Payments.

1.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if it is intended to relate social welfare payments to increases in the cost of living.

Rates of social Welfare benefits are determined from time to time in the light of changes in the cost of living and having regard to the capacity of the Exchequer and the national economy to support the burden involved. It is not intended to provide machinery to enable adjustments to be made automatically by reference to an index such as the consumer price index.
