Vol. 181 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Airport Personnel.

13.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the method of employing personnel in Shannon Airport (a) in sales and catering, (b) in positions under the jurisdiction of his Department and (c) in conjunction with the executives of the proposed new factories in the industrial zone.

The Sales and Catering Service is operated on my behalf by the Comptroller of Sales and Catering who is in the position of an independent contractor. He is solely responsible for the employment of such staff as is necessary for the operation of the Service. Staff employed in positions under my jurisdiction at the Airport are normally recruited by way of open competition conducted by the Civil Service Commissioners in accordance with the Civil Service Regulation Acts, 1956 to 1958. A small number of temporary appointments are made by me from candidates who are advised to apply by advertisement and whose qualifications are screened by a Board of departmental officials. Labourers and casual day-to-day appointments are made by the responsible officers at the Airport by way of selection from lists of suitable personnel sent forward by the Ennis and Limerick Employment Exchanges. I have no function in regard to the employment of personnel by the new factories being erected in the industrial zone at the Airport.
