Vol. 181 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Harbour Scheme.

14.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will make a statement on the position in relation to the implementation of the second part of the Galway harbour scheme.

The application of the Galway Harbour Commissioners for permission to invite tenders a third time for the carrying out of the Galway Harbour Improvement Scheme is still under consideration and I have invited the Harbour Commissioners to send a deputation to meet me for further discussion. Following this meeting I would hope to be able to convey an early decision to the Commissioners.

May I take it from the Minister that there will be no further clauses to the latest scheme?

The delay in making the decision has been fully justified. Considerable changes have taken place in the pattern of coastal traffic during the period of discussion. Ancillary works not included in the original scheme and costing considerable amounts now arise for consideration. There will be a substantial harbour improvements scheme to cater for the growth of the harbour traffic to and from Galway City.

I did not get a reply to my question. Does the Minister propose to insert any further clauses in this scheme other than those which are there at the moment?

That depends on the outcome of the examination.
