Vol. 181 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballyfermot Unemployment: Establishment of Industries.

16.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if in view of the widespread unemployment in the Ballyfermot district he will take steps to promote the establishment of industries in the area.

As the Deputy is doubtless aware, various facilities and incentives have been provided by the Government to encourage the establishment and development of industries; and I understand that Dublin Corporation has set aside a substantial area in Ballyfermot for factory sites. It is for private enterprise to take advantage of these facilities and any sound proposals that may be submitted will be afforded all assistance within my power.

Mr. Ryan

Is the Minister aware that the land proposed to have been set aside by Dublin Corporation is, in fact, virgin soil with no amenities? It is inaccessible by reason of the fact that there is a canal on one side of it and a railway on the other.

I understand that there is a link-road in course of construction to link this area and to make transportation easier. The link-road is nearing completion by the Dublin Corporation.

Mr. Ryan

In view of the fact that Ballyfermot is an undeveloped area from the industrial point of view and that there are within it more unemployed and more depression than in any town in rural Ireland, would the Minister apply to Ballyfermot the benefits of the Undeveloped Areas Act?

That is a separate question.
