Vol. 181 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Caherciveen Fishery Projects.

25.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that Caherciveen Development Association have formulated proposals for the damming of the River Fertha so as to form a freshwater lake from the dam at Caherciveen Bridge to Carhan Bridge which, when stocked with salmon and trout fry, would prove an important local industry and a tourist attraction; and whether in the interests of fishery development and the tourist industry he will, in consultation with Bord Fáilte Éireann and the local authority, consider what financial assistance can be given to the Association to further the project.

I am aware of these proposals, but I am not in a position to give financial assistance for the construction of a dam. Should the project materialise, however, my Department would be prepared to advise on the fishery aspects.

Is the Minister not aware that Bord Fáilte allocated a grant of £25,000 to the Dingle area of West Kerry? Why not do something to benefit an undeveloped area like Caherciveen in order to compensate the people of the area in some measure for the taking away of the railway and to remedy the drawbacks from which the area has suffered for many years past under all Governments?

The question of Bord Fáilte grants is not one for me.
