Vol. 181 No. 7

Written Answer. - New Schools in Limerick City and County.

34.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the position and full details regarding proposals for new schools in (a) Limerick City and (b) Limerick County; and the estimated cost in each case of (a) and (b).

The information asked for in the Deputy's question is as follows:—

Vocational Schools.

Limerick City: The City of Limerick Vocational Education Committee are contemplating:—

(a) the adaptation of the former County Infirmary premises for use as schools of Commerce, Music and Art, and

(b) the extension and renovation of the Municipal Technical Institute.

I have authorised the acquisition of the former County Infirmary premises by the Committee and I understand that they are in the course of completing the legal and other formalities relating thereto. Proposals as to the accommodation and educational facilities to be provided have recently been submitted by the Committee and are under examination in my Department. Until a final decision is reached in regard to these matters it would not be possible to give an estimate of the cost of the project. Definitive proposals in regard to the other project mentioned above have not been submitted by the Committee.

The Committee has now decided to defer action in regard to the question of providing a Regional School on a site in Clancy Strand which they have already acquired.

County Limerick.

Rathkeale: Construction work commenced towards the end of October last and I understand that it is nearing completion. The estimated cost of providing and equipping this new school is £30,000.

Kilmallock: I have recently authorised the preparation of sketch-plans for a four-room school. An estimate of the cost has been sought from the Committee.

Caherconlish: A site has been procured and the Committee has sought approval for the preparation of sketch-plans. The Committee's request is at present under consideration in my Department. An estimate of the cost has not yet been submitted to my Department.
