Vol. 183 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Custom House Gardens and Lawns.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is prepared to open the gardens and lawns around the Custom House for use by the citizens of Dublin who are part owners of them.

The gardens and lawns around the Custom House were not designed to be used as a public park and it is not proposed to have them opened to the public.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say why it is not proposed to use these lawns as a public park? Surely he could trust the members of the public to protect their own property?

The grounds have not been designed for use as a public park. An inter-Departmental committee did, in fact, examine such a proposal away back in 1948 when the Deputy himself was in office and it was suggested, and subsequently agreed, that the ground should not be used as a public park.

Is it not a fact that when the late Deputy Keyes and I took over in the Custom House, this space was an unkempt wilderness? It was we who were responsible for creating the park there.
