Vol. 183 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Residence Permits for German Citizens.

18.

asked the Minister for Justice the total number of German citizens who have (a) sought and (b) been granted residence permits since January, 1945, and the names of those German citizens who have sought such permits since January, 1957.

The figures sought are not available. What the Department's records show is the number of aliens of different nationalities who are resident in the State for more than three months and, in consequence, are registered with the Garda Síochána on particular dates. Those figures, in so far as they relate to German citizens, were given in my reply to a question from Deputy Larkin last week.

I am not prepared to supply the names of those German citizens—or of the citizens of any other country— who have asked for or been given permission to reside here, as I see no reason whatsoever why the privacy of individuals should be exposed to questions of this kind.
