Vol. 183 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Incident in Dublin Ballroom.

22.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the Garda Síochána were called on by a citizen to arrest and charge a group of men involved in an incident at the Rink Ballroom, Aungier Street, Dublin, on the night of 12th June, 1960; if so, whether charges were proceeded with by the Garda authorities; and, if not, why.

I am at a loss to understand the purpose of this Question, which was put down within a matter of days of the occurrence to which it relates and at a time when the complainant had already been informed of the intentions of the Garda Síochána.

While as a general rule I am not prepared to state in the House whether or not criminal proceedings are pending against identifiable persons, unless such information has first been disclosed by those directly concerned, I think that the circumstances in which this Question was put down justify me in departing from that rule and saying that proceedings in this matter are to be taken, by way of summons, against the complainant himself as well as against some others. The fact that the case is to be dealt with in the Courts prevents me from making some further comments on the Question.
