Vol. 183 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roscommon Housing Scheme.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position with regard to the scheme for the erection of new houses in Lanesboro Street, Roscommon.

This scheme was approved in principle but the all-in cost, as subsequently estimated, is very high. No objection is being raised to the Council's proposal to invite tenders, the results of which will be awaited.

I take it that there will be no hold-up, as far as the Minister's Department is concerned, in sanctioning the proposals put forward by Roscommon County Council?

Provided, of course, that the proposals are within reason.

Is the Minister aware that the cost per house compares more than favourably with similar schemes for similar types of houses built from 1951 onwards?

I have had that particular subject examined and I would not go quite so far as the Deputy. The comparison is not quite a fair one, and the costs are so based that they would not really give a finished cost price that could be regarded as a reasonable price for the accommodation provided. I trust that the council will achieve what they hope to achieve and that the price will not be as high as we think it will be.

Is the Minister including in this price the cost of development as well as the actual building costs?

"Yes" and "no". "Yes" as far as the comparison is concerned and "no" as far as the over-all price is concerned.

Question No. 31 postponed.
