Vol. 183 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Traffic Detour: Powers of Local Authorities.

13.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government the powers of a local authority to oblige traffic to detour during road works; and whether the Dublin Corporation and the Dublin County Council took all appropriate steps in connection with detour notices which have been erected in the vicinity of the Fortfield Road-Templeogue Road junction, Terenure.

Local authorities have no specific power to oblige traffic to detour during road works; they have however power to close a road temporarily for the purpose of carrying out such works. As regards the second part of the Deputy's question it is understood that in the instance to which he refers portion of the road was left open to traffic and detour notices were erected, after consultation with the Garda authorities, solely as a safety measure owing to the narrowness of the road at the junction of Fortfield Road and Templeogue Road.
