Vol. 184 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army and Naval Forces: Cadetships.

94.

asked the Minister for Defence the date upon which advertisements inviting applications for cadetships in the army and the naval forces were last published, the number of replies to such advertisements and the number of cadets received into each force as a result of such advertisements; and if the rates of pay, conditions, etc., available to cadets in the army and naval forces are considered satisfactory and attractive having regard to the conditions and rates of pay offered in civilian and other posts.

The last advertisements inviting applications for daltais in Na Buan Óglaigh (An tArm, an tAer Chór and an tSeirbhís Chabhlaigh) were published in the daily newspapers on 9 Iúil, 1960, and in the weekly "Inniu" on 15 Iúil, 1960. One hundred and seventy-two completed application forms were received in the case of an tArm and four in the case of an tSeirbhís Chabhlaigh within the prescribed time limit. The results of the competitions are not yet available.

As regards the last part of the Question, the rates of pay and conditions of service of Na Buan Óglaigh are reviewed from time to time but it will be appreciated that the numbers of youths seeking to embark on an army or naval career are affected by various factors apart from those mentioned by the Deputy.
