Vol. 184 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Charlestown (Mayo) Vocational School.

103.

asked the Minister for Education why his Department turned down a proposal from Mayo Vocational Education Committee to have a vocational school built in Charlestown, County Mayo; and whether he considers that a similar proposal might be successful in the future.

The purchase of a site for a vocational school at Charlestown has been authorised, but sanction for the actual building of the school has been deferred because of the fact that a wide range of post-primary educational facilities is already within reach of the areas which would be served by the proposed school, and also because the requirements of Charlestown as a vocational school centre can be accurately assessed only when the committee's building programme for other areas of east Mayo has been completed.

Could the Minister give any indication as to when this work will be commenced?

Would the Deputy say what he means by "this work"?

The erection of the school.

Which school?

The proposed vocational school at Charlestown to which the question relates.

As I said in my reply the requirements of the Charlestown area will be assessed when the building programme for other areas of East Mayo has been completed.

Am I to understand that Charlestown will have to wait until the other schools have been completed?

Until the present programme has been completed.

Could the Minister give any indication of when that will be?

That is a separate question.
