asked the Minister for Finance what is the present position with regard to the proposal of the Galway County Council to provide lock gates at Cleggan Harbour, Connemara, to protect fishing boats there.

An offer of a grant of £1,612 10s., or 75% of the cost, whichever is the lesser, was made on 12th March, 1960, to the Galway County Council towards the provision of a removable barrier or boom, including a crane to operate it, as well as the clearance of stone obstructions on the dock bed at Cleggan Harbour, conditional on the agreement of the Council to contribute the balance of the cost, i.e. £537 10s. (25%) and to accept responsibility for the future maintenance of the works when completed.
The county council suggested that restoration of the Dock Gates would be essential to give adequate protection for the boats. As explained in the reply to the Deputy's question of 2nd March last I am advised that adequate shelter for the boats at present using the harbour would be provided by the installation of the proposed barrier or boom, and I have advised the Galway County Council accordingly in the last few days, and renewed the offer of a grant for this limited proposal.
