Vol. 185 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Córas Iompair Éireann Pensions.

27.

andMr. Casey asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether Córas Iompair Éireann have submitted an amending scheme to him to provide for an increase in pensions paid to former workers to meet the recent rise in the cost of living.

The answer is in the negative. I understand, however, that wages grade pensioners of C.I.E. will be eligible for contributory old age pensions under the Social Welfare (Amendment) Act, 1960.

Is the Minister aware that men with over 40 years' service in C.I.E. have as little as 12/- a week pension? Does he consider that an adequate pension for men who have given such long service to a company?

I have already told the Deputy that C.I.E. wages grade pensioners will qualify for contributory old age pensions under the provisions of the Social Welfare (Amendment) Act, 1960. They will get between 30/- and 40/- per week, depending on their contributions, and dependent adults, 28/6d.

Has the Minister no concern for the fact that over 50 per cent. of retired wages grade employees of C.I.E. are in receipt of a pension of less than 12/- per week after 30 or 40 years' service?

I have told the Deputy the position about contributory old age pensions.

There is no thanks to C.I.E. for the new scheme.

Has the Minister no function in this matter?

I have indicated my functions quite clearly.

I am never quite clear. Why would the Minister not answer questions regarding the Waterford-Tramore railway?
