Vol. 185 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Powerscourt House and Demesne.

2.

andMr. McQuillan asked the Taoiseach if it is a fact that the Powerscourt House and Demesne have been or are being acquired by a German company for conversion into a factory; and, if so, what steps the Government propose to take so that the scenic beauty and amenities so widely advertised at home and abroad by Bord Fáilte will be preserved.

While I understand that a Continental group has displayed interest in Powerscourt House and Demesne and in the possibility of establishing an industry there, the project appears to be still at an early stage. It should not be assumed that the sale of the estate would result in any interference with the facilities and amenities which are at present enjoyed by the public.

Can we get any assurance from the Taoiseach that he will try to safeguard these amenities to the best of his ability if that should happen?

I informed the Deputy when this matter was raised some time ago that the question of legislation to protect amenities of this kind was under consideration but it has not yet been enacted.

That is a great consolation.
